Construction Estimating Software is the Key to Making Money On Every Job!

That’s a pretty bold statement. And, frankly, it’s probably a bit of an exaggeration, but not by much. I’ll explain in a moment.

First, let me ask you a question. Are you making money consistently on your jobs? Are you sometimes use the cash from the current job (like too many contractors) to pay the bills on the last job?

If so, this is one of the most important concepts you’ll ever read.

Construction Estimating Software for Residential

Construction estimating software is really the starting point for you to make money on all your jobs. That’s because it’s easier to create measurable estimates time after time than it is to do them by hand. When you’re estimating by hand, either on a form or on the back of an envelope (I’ve seen contractors do it and I’m sure you have too.) it’s much easier to guesstimate than it is to estimate. What do I mean by that?

Guesstimating is when you look at a wall (let’s call it a 2X4 stud interior wall with drywall on both sides) and whether it’s 10 feet long or 15 feet long your guesstimate Or eye ball estimate) is that it will take about a day to do it. The problem is that’s not measurable. When you finish the job you can’t measure the result.

That’s why construction estimating software is superior (or at least software that’s well written) because you’re estimating by units.
this is ten and I don't care because it's going to be replaced here shortly

For example, the 2X4 wall might have a labor production rate of 1 foot per hour. So in the case of the 10 foot wall you’re going to have estimated labor of 10 hours and 15 hours for the 15 foot wall. That’s measurable.

As you’re doing the job or when it’s complete you can determine how long it actually took to put up the wall. Let’s say it took 12 hours for the ten foot wall instead of the 10 estimated hours. Assuming there was nothing peculiar on that job you want adjust your estimating software to 1.2 hours per linear foot so you’re right on the money for the next job.

Job cost software (it can be done manually, but it’s a pain and duplicates effort) along with you construction estimating software will ensure that you are profitable over the long term. Many contractors use QuickBooks for their accounting and payroll. With the proper construction estimating program you can have your budgets in QuickBooks so tracking your costs is as easy as paying your bills.
